Burundi
About BurundiBurundi is ranked as second among central African countries and as the 13th sub-Saharan country most affected by the AIDS epidemic. The epidemic in Burundi has been fuelled by war, poverty, and sexual violence against women.
MCC Supports:Ministry of Peace and Reconciliation Under the Cross (MIPAREC): Distribution of AIDS Comic BooksThere are many consequences of 14 years of war. Many women and children were infected by HIV/AIDS because of sexual violence. The economic crisis also has followed, and we have seen a rural exodus. This has divided families, led to a breakdown of family structure, greater sexual promiscuity, and higher rates of HIV infection. Often in AIDS education initiatives, at-risk school children are forgotten. Many people ignore or are not aware of the HIV plague, while many people also don't know their HIV status. Finally, when people are infected with AIDS, the support systems for people living with AIDS are very weak. Through the distribution of comics, the Ministry of Peace and Reconciliation Under the Cross (MIPAREC) will discuss with students and the communities various content and themes related to HIV/AIDS. If contributions to a project exceed the amount needed, MCC will use the donations to support similar projects.
