About Bangladesh

Because of the low HIV prevalence rate in the country, a lack of urgency prevails regarding education and prevention efforts. Programs aimed at high-risk groups, such as injecting drug users and commercial sex-workers, have contributed to the feeling that the general public is not at risk for HIV infection

MCC PARE Partners

While the HIV infection rates in Bangladesh are relatively low, the prevalence of other sexually transmitted diseases signals the vulnerability of the country to an HIV epidemic. Through the secondment of an MCC volunteer, and working with the MCC PARE program, an established food-security program, MCC is working in 15 villages to provide HIV and AIDS education. In 2008, the project trained 574 peer educators who will then provide education to at least 25,000 more people in their communities.

If contributions to a project exceed the amount needed, MCC will use the donations to support similar projects.
