Nationally, HIV infection rates are highest among injecting drug users and their sexual partners, as well as commercial sex workers and their clients. MCC's HIV/AIDS work is focused in the highly-affected Papua province, where HIV infection rates are 30 times that of the national average and the disease is more widespread in the general population.

 

MCC Supports:

Bethesda Health Foundation

The Bethesda Health Foundation is an inter-church organization serving 9 denominations in the Papua province. The foundation focuses on preventative healthcare and provides training programs and medicines to over 100 health centers throughout the province. Bethesda runs a large scale HIV/AIDS education program. MCC support helps Bethesda provide HIV/AIDS education training to 700 pastors and lay leaders who are then responsible for sharing information with their churches.

If contributions to a project exceed the amount needed, MCC will use the donations to support similar projects.

 

Seminary of Evangelical Churches of Papua (GKI) — AIDS Education Internship

As AIDS becomes a growing problem in the Papua province, the Seminary of Evangelical Churches of Papua has started to include HIV/AIDS issues as part of the school's curriculum. Through a grant from MCC, the seminary has created an AIDS education internship for 45 female students. The students are applying their theology studies to the reality of HIV/AIDS and developing educational information based on that connection. As a part of the internship, each woman will share this educational information with one particular church. An AIDS Theology Seminar was held in Nov. 2007; its target audience was students and faculty from 7 universities

Jayapura Support Group (JSG)

Begun in 2001 to care for people living with HIV/AIDS, the Jayapura Support Group (JSG) is made up of 10 volunteers who are currently caring for 75 people living with HIV or AIDS. The group provides counselling and support to patients, accompanies them on hospital visits in order to access testing and medication, and provides home nursing for the very sick. For patients who are no longer welcome in their own homes, JSG operates a small shelter. The project also provides nutritional food supplements and vitamins to 40 to 50 people living with HIV/AIDS. MCC has supplied a consultant to the project who is working with JSG to develop income-generating programs for those living with HIV/AIDS.
