About LaosThe Lao PDR still shows a low HIV prevalence, but with rapid socio-economic development within the country comes evidence of an expanding epidemic among the most vulnerable groups of the population.
MCC Supports:The Sangthong Peer Education ProjectOne-on-one, as well as group education and health promotion, activities will be carried out by a team of youth peer educators from each of 5 secondary schools in Sangthong District in order to cover all the major areas of the district. The main focus of education will be on reproductive health issues, HIV/AIDS, and life skills in order to protect at-risk youth that are not effectively reached through the formal government education and health system. The activities and education conducted by peer educators will be implemented in communities rather than schools, in order to reach all youth in the district, not only those youth who are privileged to attend secondary schools. I addition to providing health education, the program will provide structured, healthful, and fun programming for poor youth in a district that currently lacks any formal extracurricular activity for youth. By focusing on training core groups of peer educators and facilitating networking and exchanges the project will disseminate vital health information to communities while also providing leadership and skills training that should benefit youth in their lives and careers If contributions to a project exceed the amount needed, MCC will use the donations to support similar projects.
