About VietnamWhile the infection rate in Vietnam is still relatively low, the country has the potential for a serious epidemic. According to government statistics, HIV infections in Vietnam have increased five-fold in the last six years.
MCC Supports:Lap Thach District HIV/AIDS ProjectThe Lap Thach district is in the mountainous region of the Vinh Phuc province. In a part of the country where HIV/AIDS is a growing problem, the District Preventative Health Center has been pro-active in providing HIV/AIDS education and support. Through the establishment of peer-education clubs and support groups, the project hopes to reach out to families affected by AIDS. The project will also continue to train community leaders (93 in 3 communities in 2008) and offer HIV testing, counselling, and advocacy at the health center. If contributions to a project exceed the amount needed, MCC will use the donations to support similar projects.
Tam Nong District HIV/AIDS ProjectIn Phu Tho province, where this project operates, more than 90% of HIV infections are attributed to intravenous-drug use. Other factors include prostitution, migration for work, and the lack of good health-care practices, sanitation, and education. Through their own work and membership in the district steering committee, the Tam Nong District Women's Union is undertaking the following activities: training local leaders and workers engaged in HIV/AIDS work, raising awareness in the general public and in high-risk groups, and providing assistance to HIV/AIDS patients and their families. In 2008, district youth organized a cultural exchange and communication event attended by 2,000 people. $126 Cdn./$100 U.S. covers the cost of organizing a district AIDS conference. $379 Cdn./$300 U.S. provides training for 100 key community leaders. If contributions to a project exceed the amount needed, MCC will use the donations to support similar projects.
Thanh Thuy District HIV/AIDS ProjectIn Phu Tho province, where this project operates, more than 90 percent of HIV infections are attributed to intravenous drug use. Other factors include prostitution, migration for work, poor health care practices, and lack of sanitation and education. Through their own work and membership on the district steering committee, the Thanh Thuy District Health Center is undertaking the following activities: training local leaders and workers engaged in HIV/AIDS work in 15 communities in 2008, raising awareness in the general public and in high risk groups, and providing assistance to HIV/AIDS patients and their families. $126 Cdn./$100 U.S. covers the cost of organizing a district AIDS conference. $379 Cdn./$300 U.S. provides training for 100 key community leaders.
